POTSDAM — A Norfolk man has died of injuries he suffered when he was struck by a train on a Potsdam trestle Saturday morning.
The Potsdam Police Department said it was notified at 8:48 a.m. that a CSX freight train struck a man with a bicycle on the trestle over the Raquette River parallel to Sandstone Drive. The man, later identified as 41-year-old Jonathan E. Black, was found in the river and pulled to shore where lifesaving measures were taken by the police department, the Potsdam Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Black was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital where he died.
The village police department said it is coordinating the investigation with CSX. Preliminary findings indicate that Black was standing on the tracks facing north when he was hit by the northbound train on the south end of the trestle. There was pedestrian emergency space on the east side of the rails, but police said Black was on the west side.
The train’s operators signaled with horns when passing through the nearby Pine Street intersection and again when they saw the man in the train’s path, according to police.
Traffic was limited on Sandstone Drive all Saturday morning.
